Most patients feel comfortable returning to work or normal routines within a few days of gum grafting, and the initial healing of the graft site takes about one to two weeks. Full healing, when the new tissue has matured and blended with your natural gums, usually takes six to eight weeks. At Precision Periodontal and Implant Center, we serve Redondo Beach patients from our nearby El Segundo office and walk every patient through the recovery process so there are no surprises.

What Happens During the First Few Days?

The first 48 to 72 hours are when you will notice the most swelling and tenderness. This is a normal part of healing. If tissue was taken from the roof of your mouth, that area may feel more sore than the graft site itself.

During this window, most patients:

  • Use prescribed or over-the-counter pain relief as directed
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of the face in short intervals
  • Stick to cool, soft foods like yogurt, smoothies, and mashed potatoes
  • Rest and avoid strenuous exercise

Many people find the discomfort more manageable than they expected, especially when they follow their aftercare instructions closely.

What Does Week One Through Week Two Look Like?

By the end of the first week, swelling usually fades significantly. The graft may look white or slightly gray at first, which is normal as the tissue begins to establish a blood supply.

Around the second week, sutures are typically removed or dissolve on their own. You may be cleared to gradually reintroduce more foods, though you should continue chewing on the opposite side of your mouth until we say otherwise. You will usually use a prescribed antimicrobial rinse instead of brushing the treated area during this time.

When Is the Gum Graft Fully Healed?

Between weeks three and eight, the grafted tissue strengthens and begins to match the color and texture of the surrounding gums. You will return to normal brushing at the graft site using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a gentle technique.

Complete maturation of the tissue can continue for a few months. Follow-up visits allow us to confirm the graft has attached well and is protecting the exposed root as intended. You can read more about how grafting works on our gum recession treatment page.

What Can Slow Down Gum Graft Recovery?

A few habits and factors can interfere with healing:

  • Smoking or vaping, which reduces blood flow to the graft
  • Pulling the lip to look at the site, which can disturb the tissue
  • Brushing or flossing the graft too soon
  • Eating hard, crunchy, or spicy foods before you are cleared
  • Untreated gum disease, which should be addressed before grafting through periodontal disease treatment

If you notice increasing pain after the first few days, heavy bleeding, or signs of infection, contact our office right away.

Can Sedation Make the Experience Easier?

For patients who feel anxious about oral surgery, comfort options can make a big difference. Our sedation services help many patients relax during their procedure, so the entire experience feels calmer from start to finish.

Why Gum Grafting Is Worth the Recovery

A few weeks of healing can provide years of protection. Gum grafting covers exposed roots, reduces sensitivity, and creates thicker, healthier tissue. That stronger foundation also helps support long-term success if you need dental implants in the future.
